The Slow Seven: envelope poems, baby elephants, and a psalm for those shame spiraling
What I'm reading, thinking about, and generally delighting in.
Hello, dear ones! I’m writing to you this morning from the gray wet blanket of November on the east coast. I was almost tricked (almost!) by the possibility that the suffering of winter wasn’t coming for us. But, alas, this week it showed up in the form of degrees below the number 40 (*shiver*) and the promise that soon all things shall soon freeze, even my insides. Holding out hope that the chill will turn to snow and all things good will appear on the horizon.
This is our second volume of The Slow Seven, and I love thinking about what I will share with you each time I show up in this space. I am so grateful for those of you have chosen to subscribe. I don’t take your support or your value of my work lightly and I will do my best to make this newsletter something you look forward to! You are always welcome to email me or leave a comment if you want to give me feedback or you have a favorite thing from my list you’d like me to share more of. (More spiritual reading? More current articles? More poetry? Let me know!)
This past weekend I spent time in Durham, working with a group of writers on craft and revision, and learning so much from one of my favorite writers, Lauren Winner. This was the first Craft and Revision Retreat, but more are on the horizon. If you’re interested in a small, helpful weekend to talk seriously about the craft of writing, look them up. I also had the chance to connect with my Mastermind writing group, Cara Meredith and Erin Lane. I wrote about them here. And Cara and I managed to fit in the learning and performing of a new old TikTok dance, while dressed as Louisa May Alcott and Walt Whitman. I know you can’t wait! It’ll be on my instagram tomorrow! :)
I am almost halfway through pounding out my book manuscript for my book about Ace and the Beatitudes (no title yet, but you’ll be the first to know). As we move into the holidays I will be stepping back from creating new content for The Slow Way newsletter and podcast for a bit so I can focus on the manuscript. But I’ll keep these coming for you fresh every two weeks. And I’ll keep you updated on the process.
In the meantime, here’s what I’m reading, thinking about, and generally delighting in:
