The Slow Seven: All Souls, Christian Girl Autumn, Bono and The World Series
Just seven things I'm thinking about, listening to, and generally delighting in.
Well, hi, friends.
Welcome to our first ever edition of The Slow Seven, a paid-subscriber newsletter all about the seven things I thinking about, listening to, or generally delighting in. Over here in Jersey, we are living our best lives. The Phillies are leading in the World Series against the Astros, and Chris and my older boys are avid Phillies fans. The last time they were in the series it was the first year of my oldest son’s life, back in 2008. They won the title that year. They had only won the series once before when Chris was the very same age as August, in 1980. So we know how rare this moment is. We’ve been trying our best to stay up and watch the games. Though I can never make it past the fifth inning. (Lady needs some sleep.)
We spent Halloween night in New York City, which for our family was just the level of Halloween intensity we’re used to. We loved our Halloweens in our old life on the packed streets in San Francisco, music everywhere and people dancing in windows. This felt familiar, plus we got to have some chili with friends in between candy collecting. Ace was loving our friend Lucy in her dinosaur costume. He was especially taken with her dance moves.
I don’t know about you, but in my attempt to lean into the Church calendar, I can find myself shocked and surprised when I wake up from the intensity (and fun) of parenting on Halloween night, and find myself on All Saints Day. I always need a little guidance to make that mental and emotional adjustment.
Sarah Bessey’s gorgeous reflection on All Souls Day (which is celebrated today in the Christian calendar), ghosts, and loss spoke right to my journey. It’s my first All Souls Day without my dad. I don’t know how I’m going to mark it, but reading Sarah’s reflection has given me a sturdy spot from which to think about, pray through, and mark this day.
